Bradford. Instead of being dismayed at this loss Franklin's keen resources turned it to advantage and brought out an almanac so novel and entertaining that three editions were required to supply the demand that extended from New England 'to the South. As these almanacs were rated according to the learning and reputation of the Philomath, or astronomical calculator who was identified with each, Franklin supplied this deficiency by creating such a character under the name of Richard Saunders otherwise Poor Richard and the following, his introduction to the first issue, that of 1733, shows the spirit and completeness of the result.

Description : Excerpt from A Course in Expository Writing

This problem, which is indeed a hard one, has been partly solved in supplying a real audience. For the test of writing is its effect on the audience. If the student knows his audience, and can measure the effect he produces, he has a means not merely of knowing, in a general way, that his writing is weak or ineffective, but of discover ing just what is the difference between the kind of effect it actually produces and the kind he meant it to produce; and he will be ready and able to go back to his writing and find the causes of his failure. If his account of basket-ball is not convincing, the question naturally comes up, why? And he is directed back to his writing to find out the trouble.

(2) For a work written in the sixteenth century, this play is singularly free from that coarseness of expression which, while it carried with it no sense of impropriety two or three centuries ago, has grown to be very distasteful to our own age - coarseness which abounds in Shake spere, and from which even the authorised version of the Bible is not free. Occasionally, though very rarely, - not more than three or four times in the whole play, - coarse expressions occur in The Tragedy, and when they do so, I have thought.

Description : Excerpt from A History of the Royal Dublin Society

The present members of the Society, as well as the general public, may have certain ideas as to the utility and importance of its work in the past, without any definite conception of the varied and comprehensive character of the very thorough methods adopted in the course of their labours by the long line of distinguished men who joined in carrying out the Society's objects. It is well that now, at the close of nearly two centuries, through the public spirit of Lord Ardilaun, the details can be systematised, and some account in historical shape be given of its endeavours, so that the innumerable obligations under which our country stands to generations of Irishmen who have worked for the common good under its auspices may be recognised.

Description : Excerpt from What Do We Want?

What do we want? It appears that today there is no room for this question. Why, everybody knows what we want. We want Swaraj; we want the freedom of our country. We are fighting for the right of the Indian people to live as a free nation, to rule itself, to determine its own destiny according to its own needs and desires. To attain independent nationhood, - this is our goal. Who does not know it? Where is the self-respecting Indian who is not ready to take part in the struggle which will lead us to this goal? Has not the entire Indian nation declared its de termination to conquer Swarai? Are not more and more people coming into the struggle every day? All are con tributing their share; every class is taking part in the common struggle. Our goal is no longer unknown; the very children in the schools are aware of it and are ready to contribute their mite towards the achievement of Swarai. Our enemy knows this, and is using all means, fair and foul, to thwart us. To come now and ask, What do we want?, is to betray utter ignorance. It is ridiculous, - stupid.

Description : Excerpt from Jefferson Davis, and His Complicity in the Assassination of Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States: And Where the Traitor Shall Be Tried for Treason

Jefferson Davis commenced his rebel career by two crimes - perjury as a Senator and former member of the Cabinet of President Pierce, and treason against the United States. He had been a cadet, and received his education at the expense of the government. A man guilty of two such heinous crimes can hardly be supposed not to have encouraged these preliminary attempts at the assassination cf the chief, whom he branded as a usurper and a cruel and remorseless tyrant.

Description : Excerpt from Hand Book of Honduras, Vol. 7

That part of Central America now known as the Republic of Honduras was discovered by Columbus during his fourth voyage, about ten years after his first expedition. The locality first seen by him was the island of Guanaja, the most easterly of the group now called the Bay Islands, where he arrived on the 30th of July, 1502. He reached the mainland on the i4th of August at a point which he named Punta de Caxinas, a cape stretching out into the sea and forming what was afterwards known as the bay of Truxillo. Here, the great explorer's foot first pressed the mainland of the continent of America. Some 15 leagues eastward, at the mouth of a river which he named Rio de la Posesion, now known as Rio Tinto, he again landed and took formal possession of the country for Spain.

We next hear of Honduras when Gil Gonzales Davila, While on a voyage from Santo Domingo to Nicaragua in 1524, steering too far to the westward, reached the coast near the bay now called Puerto Cortez. Having lost some of his horses there, he gave it the name of Puerto Caballos port of Horses], but made no settlement.

In the same year, an expedition sent by Cortez from Mexico, under command of Cristobal de Olid, reached the coast about 14 leagues east of Puerto Caballos and founded a settlement, to which was given the name of Triumfo de la Cruz, which was, however.

Description : Excerpt from Bradford S History of Plimoth Plantation

It is a matter of regret that no picture of Governor Bradford exists. Only Edward Winslow of the May flower Company left an authenticated portrait of him self, and that, painted in England, is reproduced ln this volume. In those early days Plymouth would have been a poor field for portrait painters. The people were struggling for their daily bread rather than for to-morrow's fame through the transmission of their features to posterity.

It would be no difficult talk, by a few re marks interfperfed, and illuftrations of the feveral pafi'ages of the bible, where the word Satan, Sec. Is named, to enable the com monei't reader to fee, that divine revelation gives no countenance to the exil'tence of any fuch evil beings, or to any power but that of our benevolent creator being exercifed over us. On we went as usual in the teeth of a dreadful fire of guns and musketry, and after a' desperate struggle we got within their triple and quadruple intrench'ments and then their day of reckoning came'indeed. Driven from trench to trench, and surrounded on' all sides, they retired, fighting m-ost bravely, to the river, into which they were drlven pell-mell, -a tremendous fire of musketry pouring on them from our bank, and the Horse Artillery finishing their destruction with grape; I had the pleasure myself of spiking two guns which were turned on us.

The following brief history of Congregationalism was written at the suggestion of the Rev. Robert West, the editor of The Advance, and was published in a series of articles in that paper. It was received with a degree of favor wholly unexpected by the author; and its publication in book form has been urgently called for by many esteemed brethren more competent than he to judge of its probable utility.

Some God, some religion, humanity must have. What God, what religion, will it be? Will the abstract God of deism content us Assuredly not. We want, in Kant's happy phrase, a God that can interest us.' He then proceeds to quote a somewhat abbreviated (as he says) but beautiful and striking passage from Cardinal Newman's representation of what is contained and implied in the idea of God, as if it only applied to the God of Christianity. This passage, thus partially quoted by him, continues on as follows.

Down there immediately after breakfast I would play my two rounds, and catch the four o'clock tram back to the town in time for tea. Only, as a matter of fact, I knew Phyllis would be out on the sands gathering health and exercising the dog, and it would be bad for both of them if any expectation of meeting me brought the habit of returning to the hotel too early. 80 it came to pass that I generally went to the Wigwam (as we called the social club in the town) and enjoyed a little bridge or billiards or intellectual conversa tion over the day's golf until the clock pointed to dinner-time. Then I would dash hastily back to the hotel and change.

Description : Excerpt from The Life of Count Moore: Compiled From Materials Supplied by His Family

In all those important questions where the religious interests of Catholics were at stake his countrymen had no more untiring advocate. In the House of Commons on every Opportunity he pointed out in very cogent language the grievances under which Irish Catholics laboured in the matter of university education, more than once taking as his theme Mr. Gladstone's well known statement that the condition of things as regards university education for Catholics was bad - scandal ously bad. He kept constantly urging on the Admiralty the inadequate provision made for the religious needs of Catholic sailors in the navy and it was undoubtedly owing in great part to his exertions that some improve ments were made to remedy the Spiritual destitution of the unfortunate Catholic seamen. For his services in this respect Count Moore received a Special letter of thanks from the Catholic Hierarchy of Ireland assembled in Maynooth College, with his Eminence Cardinal Logue in the chair.

As to father Campion, and his companions, to whom their adversa ries pretended to impute treasons of another kind, viz. I know not what conspiracies formed at Rhemes and Rome, we are fully persuaded that they were no more traitors than the rest; and that the true cause ot their death was the hatred of their religion; and therefore we have given them a place with the rest in these memoirs.

And, indeed, it seems to have been the more common opinion of the nation, at that time, and even of the queen herself, if we believe Mr. Camden, in his Elizabeth, that these men were not guilty of those pretended conspiracies; which they, for their part, notwithstanding all their rackings and torturings, all, to a man, constantly denied, both in life and death, though they had their lives offered them, if they would own themselves guilty: which thing alone, to every thinking man, must be a full demonstration of their innocence. To pass over other considerations as for instance, that several of them had never been in their lives at the places where they were pretended to have been plot ting; or, if they had ever been there, were not there at least at the time of the pretended plot; several of them had never been seen in their lives, by the perjured witnesses that deposed against them; nor had ever seen one the other (though they were accused to haxe plotted together) till they all met at the bar to take their trials; which, with many other arguments too long to be here inserted, prove abundantly, that they were, indeed, no plotters and that their only guilt was their religion.

Description : Excerpt from Sebastian

David slept badly. For this, the winter cough, that had irritated his wife's sensitiveness even in the first year of their marriage, was probably responsible. Va nessa always asserted that he was asthmatic, and certainly he was short of breath. Although he was habitually an insomniac, to-night he had woken with a start, suddenly, as if from some external cause. He lay still for a few moments, his heart beating quickly, his pulses throbbing. What had startled him, how had he been roused?

He opened his eyes. Darkness was in the room, and quiet. He occupied the back room on the second floor; the blinds were drawn, the outlook was on to the mews. Perhaps Dr. Gifford's brougham, unusually late, had driven its noisy way over the cobbled stones. But in that case he would hear the clink of harness, the rattle of unsteady hoofs, voices in the yard. He listened, but outside all was still. The big Harley Street house had been built in the Georgian era, the walls were thick, and it was silence they seemed to hold. Black night alone filled the room, and stillness. He shrank a little from both, lying there, hearing his own heart-beats, hearing nothing else, at first.

The information for this purpose is chiefly supplied by a Gazette Extraordinary, published by Authority at Calcutta, April 26, 1852.

The admirable preface which Mr. Henry James wrote for the first volume of Guy de Maupassant in this series leaves one little to say of the novelist's great characteristics. He had fully developed these when Mr. James wrote of him, and he died soon afterward without notable change in matter or manner. He re mained always the De Maupassant ob served by Mr. James for good as well as for bad, if the tales here reproduced are to be taken as representative of his slighter work.

Description : Excerpt from Guesses at Truths: Ethical, Social, Political and Literary

A history of religious beliefs would be a history of the progress of the human mind. In its earliest form religion exists as a blind awe of the forces of Nature and as a propitiation of some threatening and powerful unseen influence. Its first aim' is self protection, and its way to self-protection is sought in sacrifice. From Devil-worship, with its panic stricken immolation of human victims, to Nature worship, with its recognition of a something benevolent and beautiful to be adored, as well as zfsomething horrible to be flattered and appeased, is a great stride. The instinct is no longer one of terror only. Gratitude and affection have their word to say. Sacrifice con tinnes, but its form is modified, and to follow the main trend of belief is to approach more and more nearly to an ideal of trust in the good intention of the unknown Powers. A certain element of cruelty, of savagery, of unreason, survives unto this day, but for many thousands of years the mind of man has striven to emancipate itself from its original cowardice, and with the birth of Monotheism it became essential to associate the idea of the Creator and Ruler with attributes of mercy and justice. Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right 3 The 34 beforethis life and after.

Description : Excerpt from English Literature

There are some things in this world that are more easily understood than explained. One of these is literature, which apparently has to do with books, yet we know that almanacs, catalogs, dictionaries, and many other kinds of books are not literature. Men may laboriously compile a great work of research, like a census report or an encyclo pedia, extending through many portly volumes, and yet not write a single line of literature in the entire undertaking. On the other hand, an inspired writer may arrange a few words in a particular order, produce what the world accepts as a great poem, and win immortality for the literature that he has wrought. Sometimes it is easy to decide whether a particular work is literature or not. Shakespeare's Hamlet and Gray's Elegy are literature; a city directory and the Congressional Record are not. At times, however, the decision is more difficult. A personal diary may be a dull narrative of uninteresting daily routine, or it may be a vivacious record of a human life that continues to interest succeeding generations of readers. Whenever a book or a document of any sort gives evidence of artistic revelation of anything more than a bare statement of fact we begin to detect the literary quality. That quality may be only sufficient to arouse a brief temporary interest, or it may be enough to assure the writer's fame for all time.

The Trustees believe that the experimental period in the education of the blacks is drawing to a close. Certain principles that were doubted thirty years ago now appear to be generally recognized as sound. In the next thirty years better systems will undoubtedly prevail, and the aid of the separate States is likely to be more and more freely bestowed. There will also be abundant room for continued generosity on the part of individuals and associations. It is to encourage and assist the workers and the thinkers that these papers will be published.

Each paper, excepting the first number (made up chiefly of official docu ments), will be the utterance Of the writer whose name is attached to it, the Trustees disclaiming in advance all responsibility for the statement of facts and opinions.

Nothing could go on; but the Arabs paid us daily visits, and gave many useful hints about the journey in prospect. One hint must especially be regarded, which was, to take care, on arrival at the lake, that I did not enter the village of a certain sultan called Mabaya, to whose district Muanza, at the southern extremity of the lake, they directed me to go. This precautionary warning was advanced in consequence of a trick the Sultan had played an Arab, who, after visiting him in a friendly way, was forcibly detained until he paid a ransom for himself an unjust measure, which the Arabs pointedly advert to as destructive to To lose no time whilst the.

To his liberality several previous publications of a similar description have been indebted; and he has shown equal kindness in reference to the work now before the reader. His books, papers, and memo randa were lent with a cheerful promptitude, which greatly enhanced the favour, and proved that his stores have been amassed not merely for personal gratification, but the public benefit.

Description : Excerpt from Songs of the Silent World: And Other Poems

There is no 'vacant Chair. The loving meet A group unbroken - smitten, who knows how One sitteth silent only, in his usual seat we gave him once that freedom. Why not now?

Perhaps he is too weary, and needs rest He needed it too Often, nor could we Bestow. God gave it, knowing how to do so best. Which of us would disturb him Let him be.

There is no vacant chair. If he Will take The mood to listen mutely, be it done. By his least mood we crossed, for which the heart must ache, Plead not nor question Let him have this one.

Description : Excerpt from Appreciation of the Service of James Hutchins Baker, Vol. 14: President of the University of Colorado; January 1, 1892 to January 1, 1914

The news of President Baker's retirement brought expressions of regret from every side. Commemorative exercises were held in the Macky Auditorium on December 18th. The following evening the Faculty Senate gave a dinner in his honor. A reception in honor of Mrs. Baker was given by the ladies of the faculties on December 17th. There have been many similar functions by various groups and organizations, and others are planned for the near future.

In this Bulletin are given: the letter of resignation; the Regents' resolutions; resolutions of the faculty; abstracts of addresses made at the commemorative exercises; excerpts from editorials, letters, and telegrams. In this Introduction an attempt is made to give certain pertinent facts that may not appear elsewhere.

Description : Excerpt from Admiral Phillip: The Founding of New South Wales

It ought not to lack interest on this account; for it tells the story of the beginning of Greater Britain in the South.

Of the personality of Phillip, as we have said, little is really known. He was an obscure naval captain selected by the Govern ment of the time to establish a penal settle ment at the other side of the world. He landed on the shores of a country which, to all his companions, appeared a most forbid ding and unpromising land - one that would never be worth anything to anyone.' Phillip, a few months after his arrival, wrote to Eng land to assure his superiors that it would prove the most valuable acquisition Great Britain ever made.' For these prophetic words alone, the man who uttered them, so far as we can come to a knowledge of him, is worth knowing. Such an understanding of his character as can be gathered by industry of research, this book endeavours to furnish.

Lord Chief Justice Eyre. I feel the weight of your observations of the difficulty under which you labour, in an extraordinary case, which can hardly be judged of by the common rules on which we proceed in cases of this nature; the Court are of a disposition to give you all the indulgence they possibly can, because there is a vast mass of evidence the case arises out of the evidence, and it is fit the case should be thoroughly canvassed. - At the same time, it is certainly notorious that the great bulk of that evidence has been in print a great while, and I cannot believe that it has not been very well considered as far as it has been in print, -i am sure that must be under stood.

The Wire hums an unfriendly song, You are all of you my slaves, it says. I am an order - hum. I am a counter-order. I am a cypher message. Refer, and hesitate. You must not act.

Sometimes it sings another refrain You are heirs, it cries, to all the fret and worry of materialism. You are strangers in this far land, isolated from your surroundings by great anxieties.

Description : Excerpt from The Early Poetry of Israel in Its Physical and Social Origins

Where it is necessary to quote the original I have done so, for the sake of those who are ignorant of Hebrew, in the letters of our own alphabet. The details of this transliteration are given on page 1 and at the top of page 4 I may say here that in the transliteration of single words in Lecture III and its notes, I have not thought it necessary always to mark the softer forms of the letters 6, g, d, k, p, and t. The name of the God of Israel is given as Yahweh, except in the translation of Deborah's song, where, as in our English version, it appears as The lord.

What is said on pages 84, 85 as to the translation of the Song of Deborah, and the division of it into lines, and its rhythms, is applicable to all the translations offered in these Lectures.

The compiler is not insensible to the delicacy of his position, as the biographer of relatives so greatly beloved and revered. But if his position has its disadvantages, these are not Without compensation. No stranger could so well delineate their character, or, at all events, detail the facts of their lives, as one who from childhood enjoyed their intimacy and confidence whilst a close and continuous correspondence for nearly thirty years, in connexion with all their plans, works, and writings, together with the possession of numerous other letters and documents, extending over a period embracing the whole of their career, must afford more than ordinary means for illustrating their motives, their opinions, and their acts.

Description : Excerpt from Memoirs of the Administration of the Right Honourable Henry Pelham, Vol. 1 of 2: Collected From the Family Papers, and Other Authentic Documents

From the large Collection of the Orford Papers, I have drawn some important information, relative to the early period of Mr. Pelham's official career, particularly to the part which he took, in public affairs, towards the close of Sir Robert Walpole's ministry.

The Papers left by Lord Chancellor Hardwicke have proved a rich source of secret history, connected with the long period of the Chancellor's public life. The most valuable and curious portion of this collection comprises the confidential correspondence of his lordship, with the Duke of Newcastle and Mr. Pelham, down to the year 1753.

Description : Excerpt from Memoirs of Archbishop Temple, Vol. 1 of 2

In order that each contributor may give of his best, he has been left as free as possible, consistently with the limitations of the work, to tell his own tale. A certain amount of overlapping has been the inevitable consequence; it is hoped that the price of the additional freedom will be judged worth the payment. The result may remind readers somewhat of an old building in which many styles are mingled together without much attempt on the part of successive builders to make them fit into each other. The general effect is, however, sometimes fine; the building creates its own symmetry; it grows into unity of itself, and perhaps Archbishop Temple may be left to speak for himself; he is his own epistle, known and read of all men.

The first thing which attracted attention on getting out of bed was a heavy snow storm, and the next the blare of trumpets announcing the march of a large division of Mobiles to the front. Never a very soldierlike looking body of men, to-day, marching at ease (l) against the driving snow, they resembled a fortuitous combination of atoms rather than a com pact body of drilled men marching out to do desperate battle; for that is their mission, and Within a few hours is evident. Description : Excerpt from Spring Blossoms and Autumn Leaves: A Collection of Poems

The gifts of Nature are showered impartially on poor and rich alike; and Poesy - which is essentially the gift of Nature - has stirred with equal force sympathetic hearts in all ranks of life. The well-to-do have the greater advantage in being able to invite attention to their poetic thoughts; but, in Spite of all obstacles untutored singers of the lower classes have made themselves known, though too many have been perforce content to remain the mute inglorious Miltons of their own immediate circles, through lack of opportunity to be heard elsewhere.

That the working classes have produced poets to whom the world has listened, the long roll of names in the literary history of Britain, beginning with Burns and Critchley Prince, bears eloquent testimony. Yorkshire has not been silent in the sweet poetic chorus. It has, and has had, sons and daughters whose tongues have been inspired with the fervour of rich imaginations and a strong desire to uphold the cause of truth and justice.

In this little book another Yorkshireman, a true son of the soil, places before his fellows, for praise or condemnation, the outpourings of his poetic mind. Like most poets, to whom the advantages of a good education have been denied, Michael Rathmell writes directly from the heart. Without academic polish, his lines have the true ring of manly thought; and if at times the diction is not so euphonious as it might be, or his Pegasus slightly limps when it should amble gracefully along, at least the sentiments are pure and the language is forcible and appropriate.

Michael Rathmell was born at Huby, in the parish of Harewood, in the year 1828. In that pie-education age there v'vas no school of any kind in the village. With a mind singularly attracted by the beauties of Nature - and Nature is beautiful in Wharfedale - young Rathmell, as he grew up, soon felt an instinctive longing for the knowledge that books alone can teach. But the acquisition of these was difficult for a poor country lad. Almost unaided he therefore toiled up the steeps of knowledge, picking up, by diligent reading of the books which came in his way, smatterings of many subjects.

Description : Excerpt from The Rise of the Mediaeval Church: And Its Influence on the Civilisation of Western Europe From the First to the Thirteenth Century

The comparatively recent revival of interest in Church history has given birth to many general Church histories from English and American scholars. Numer ous translations of discriminating and painstaking German authors are also available. A large number of intensive monographs has likewise appeared. But all these texts are written for classes in theological schools. Not a single Church history suitable either for regular college work, or for popular reading, is available; and yet all the standard courses in history are provided with up-to-date texts and illustrative material.

And he had lived such loveless years That suffering had made him wise And she had known no truer tears Than those of girlhood's eyes.

And he, perhaps, had loved before One who had wed? One who had died? So life for him had been but poor In love for which he sighed.

In years and love she was so young Youth paused and beckoned at the gate, And bade her list love's birds that sung She said that love should wait.

Description : Excerpt from Christian Moral Principles: Seven Sermons Preached in Grosvenor Chapel as a Lenten Course in 1921

These sermons were not intended for publi cation, nor were they written; and I know that in my case unwritten sermons are not fit for publication. But they were very well taken down by a shorthand reporter, and I have agreed to their publication, and revised them in a measure for the purpose, because I have some reason to hope they may be useful to others besides those who heard them in Grosvenor Chapel; and also for another reason.

We are told constantly and truly that we greatly need good books on Moral Theology which are something more than adaptations of Roman Catholic books. Now moral theo logy may have different meanings.

From all this he learned much that amazed, much that amused him, but what interested him most Of all had to do with the third stage of his retrospective pilgrimage. If he had not been bound for Harby eventually, what came to his ears by chance would have spurred him thither, ever keen as he was to behold the Vivid, the theatrical in life. Women had al ways delighted him, if they had Often damned him, and there was a woman's name on rumor's many tongues when rumor talked of Harby. So it came to be that he rode sooner than he had proposed, and far harder than he had proposed, through green, level Cambridgeshire, through green, hilly Oxfordshire, with Harby for his goal. Chameleon-like, he changed hues on the way, shifting, with the help of his wallet, back into a gaudier garb less likely to be frowned on in regions kindly to the King.

Many of its members had long cherished the military spirit, and that, too, at a time when that Spirit was nearly dead in Massachusetts; and some Of the company organ izations were among the earliest formed in the State, and had for years been the propagating nurseries Of that pa triotism which rallied to the defence Of Constitutional Lib erty and Law, when they were assailed by traitors. It was the drill in quiet times the holiday Show which evoked the derision Of the philanthropist, and the Op position Of the advocate Of peace; the parade and mus ter, on which too many looked as the mere entertainment Of a day, Of no practical utility; it was this that pre pared, and had in readiness, the men and the arms, and the needed skill, when the occasion called for their use in the stern work Of actual service.

At such a time, - when the military Spirit had nearly died out in the State; when the militia Of Massachusetts was about Obsolete, and the soldier in uniform was looked upon by thousands as a mere popinjay, half fuss and half feathers, One far-seeing man, in whose prophetic mind the events Of the near and fast-approaching future had begun to shape themselves, commenced to revive the State mil itary; and by his influence as chief executive, and, also.

This, then, is M. Zola's reply to the cry repeatedly raised by his hero, Abb Pierre Froment, in the pages of Lourdes, Paris, and Rome: A new religion, 3 new religion Critics of those works were careful to point out that no real answer was ever returned to the Abb 's despairing call; and it must be confessed that one must yet wait for the greater part of that answer, since Fruitfulness, though complete as a narrative, forms but a portion of the whole. It is only after the publication of the succeeding volumes that one will be able to judge how far M. Zola's doctrines and theories in their ensemble may appeal to the requirements of the world.

While pictorial and sculptured forms have their undoubted value as exponents of truth, we must not forget that there is a possibility of such use degenerating into mere picture worship, as may be very evidently seen in the adoration paid by the Russian peasantry to their sacred pictures.

Description : Excerpt from Emmett Lawler

She lay now, as a worn-out woman when all the house is still. There was a haunting beauty about her face. Her cheeks, which all the ills Of life had not robbed Of their color, were now the shade Of pink sea Shells. Her eyes were partly open, as if she wanted to look once more at her ship-wrecked children. Her hair had been the pride Of the countryside. It reached far below her knees; so long it was. It was now brushed back from her high, white forehead. By the light Of the kerosene lamp, the clustering ringlets looked like a mass of dull red rubies. The valiant woman had given her life to usher into the world - a little dead baby.

She had never believed that poor people should bring large families into the world. And now, like many a sol dier, with face upturned to the Sky, she had given her life in a battle the idea Of which she felt was wrong.

Her husband, however, felt that God tempers the wind to the shorn lamb. He was quite unmindful Of the fact that if the lamb had not been shorn there would have been no need Of tempering the wind. But that was all Over now. The dreary rain fell steadily on the roof and windows Of the cabin.

Description : Excerpt from Manual of Law and Usage: Compiled From the Standards and the Acts and Decision of the General Assembly of the Pesbyterian Church in the United States of America

Appreciating the generous favor with which the pre vious editions of this Manual have been received, I am encouraged to hope that this revised and enlarged edition may prove still more acceptable and useful to those for whom it is designed - the pastors, elders, and communi cants of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America.

Keeping in view its original design as a book of ready reference to the provisions of our Standards, and to the acts and decisions of our General Assembly, I have em bodied in this edition the amendments recently made to the Confession of Faith, the Form of Government, and the Book of Discipline, together with the deliverances of the General Assembly, bringing them to the present time, in clusive of the year.1903.

Description : Excerpt from Poems: From Life

By hard and unremitting toil, to do the right and not the wrong.

When wrong is easier to do, and why not join the largest throng?

One slips along with easy stride, along the least resistance way, And caring not what may betide - well pleased with just the present day But there's a reckoning bound to come, to every man. Of debt and bill; 'tis better if he labored some. And went not down, but up the hill.

If these notes shall prove the means under God of calling attention to, and inducing a closer and more thorough searching of, the Scriptures Of truth by those who may read them, I shall be well paid for my toil, not to say that I am already a thousand times repaid for my investiga tion by the satisfaction arising from the sacred truths made plain to my mind. 0 the author.

Description : Excerpt from The Prince of Wales in India: Or From Pall Mall to the Punjaub

It was a bright alitumn morning when we landed in India, - bright not in the sense that you in England understand bright ness, but with a gleam and a heat which you only associate with the midday glare of a hot summer's day, and not at all the cold calmness Of an English autumn. Nothing could be pleasanter to all of us, heartily tired as we were of the sea and its belong ings, than at length to descry the long line of hills which told us of proximity to Bombay. Had we not had the incentive to satisfaction which a three weeks' voyage engendered, the pro Spect which presented itself, as the ship neared shore, would of itself have been sufficiently delightful. Only five minutes ago, and the sky was brilliantly lit with stars; now the sun's rays were shooting up in the east behind the grey mountains, and driving night away with startling rapidity. Like a huge pano rama Bombay rose before us. Yonder on the right was the island of Elephants, with its caves and its jungle; away in front of us Trombay Island with its mountains and precipices. Bombay itself, skirting the bay, was thrusting out, so to speak, from the lingering gloom into the advancing sunshine, its white houses, its palm-trees, its pleasant hills and valleys, and its splefidid harbour, and drawing forth, from those who now saw it for the first time, repeated exclamations of astonishment.

Description : Excerpt from The Bible and Modern Life: And Bible Words and Phrases

Book of marvelous literature and of mighty inspiration. This side of the Bible is presented in this Essay in a way to commend itself not only to the devout and reverent member of the Church, but to the man of the world who is in such crying need just now of the kind of ethical and spiritual and religious sustenance which is to be found in the Bible, and for which there is no substitute elsewhere.

In common with thousands I welcome the words of any one who thus writes with genuine warmth and affection of that Book which has had such a large share in forming the principles and building up the character of the English speaking peoples. It would be a matter of regret if the day should come when its literary power and its religious value were no longer appreciated by our race.

Description : Excerpt from Dinsmore Ely: One Who Served

In the battlefields of France there are thou sands of American graves; graves of our best and bravest; sacred places to which we shall make pilgrimage in the years to come and over which we shall stand with tears on our faces and with pride 'in our hearts. Our heads will be bared because the ground is consecrated; the last resting place of heroes who gave their young and beautiful lives for their country's cause.

Dinsmore Ely was one who gave. His was the Great, the Supreme Sacrifice. Never was Crusader of old inspired by higher and holier motives. In his letters home, which we have the privilege of giving to the public, there is revealed a knightly soul: the soul of a Bayard without fear and without reproach.
