But, there are still plenty of options to choose from. For starters, certain industries have more overnight opportunities than others. Plus, there’s always the option of creating your own flexible remote-friendly job.

Let’s cover the basics of overnight work before we get into the nitty gritty.

What is Considered an Overnight Remote Job?

First, let’s discuss what overnight remote jobs actually are. In the US, work schedules are split into three different shifts:

  • First Shift – 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Second Shift – 5:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.
  • Third Shift – 12:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m.

So, a business open 24 hours a day has three sets of workers to cover all three shifts. In this case, we’re talking about the third shift which runs from 12:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. As a result, it’s commonly referred to as “overnight” or the “graveyard” shift.

Types of Overnight Remote Jobs

Like all remote jobs, overnight ones are broken down into two main types:

  1. Employee
  2. Self-Employment

As a reminder, an employee position is like a traditional job. In other words, you work for a company. As a result, you are given specific rights like:

  • Steady pay
  • Benefits eligibility
  • Taxes withheld from pay

However, you (as the employee) are expected to follow the company’s policies and procedures like working assigned shifts and requesting time off.

On the other hand, self-employment is working for yourself. That is you are your own boss. For example, business owners, freelancers, and independent contractors are all self-employed.

As a self-employed worker you’re responsible for:

  • Finding work
  • Paying estimated taxes
  • Collecting payments
  • Health insurance

As a result, you create your schedule and come and go as you please.

Of course, each type have their pros and cons, and you’re likely to come across both while searching for overnight remote work. So, it’s important to know the difference ahead of time. Needless to say, please know your remote work type BEFORE you start your remote job search.

Remember, knowing your “type” (besides tall, dark, and handsome or Henry Cavill) simplifies your job search and makes it easier to find work.

Next, let’s consider some remote-friendly overnight positions. But first, it’s helpful to think of industries that would hire overnight workers in the first place.

After all, not all businesses are open 24/7. However, tons of companies with online or virtual footprints are “open” any time, day or night.

Healthcare & Social Work

Medical questions pop up at any time. As a result, many insurance companies and medical centers have 24-hour hotlines patients can call to ask questions. And, thanks to telehealth, more and more users readily turn to phones and computers to solve health concerns without going to the hospital.

Tele-nurse, phone-triage, counselors, therapists, and crisis line operators are all common healthcare overnight remote jobs. Of course, a medical background or social work experience is required!

Tech Support

Is there ever a good time for an accident? Of course not. However, it seems like many accidents happen at the most inopportune times like, say, overnight. As a result, insurance companies have agents available 24/7 to answer calls and help policyholders file claims. There’s also a need for all hours roadside assistance. For example, U-Haul and AAA have remote overnight dispatchers to assist stranded motorists.

Customer Service

As always, there are a lot of remote customer service jobs. And this includes overnight remote jobs too. Banks, like Discover and American Express, offer 24/7 support for card holders. As a matter of fact, there are a number of work from home American Express jobs.

The news never sleeps! In fact, news outlets follow a 24/7 coverage cycle. So, it makes sense that online publications look for writers to post breaking news no matter what time it is.

Hospitality

Likewise, the hospitality industry operates nonstop. As such, hotels and airlines use remote agents to answer guest questions and make reservations. Plus, large agencies have travel agents on staff 24/7 to make travel arrangements.

However, I always want to be super transparent about the difficulties freelancers face. First is FlexJobs. This is a membership site but it’s well worth the monthly fee. To start, FlexJobs hand screens every single listing (and there are a lot of them). It’s guaranteed that all posted positions are 100% legit. In other words, you don’t have to worry about scams. Plus, there are both employee and self-employment job leads here. So, no matter your remote work type, there are plenty of leads!

SolidGigs

Next up is SolidGigs. This is a job leads website specifically built for freelancers. As I said before, it takes a lot of work to get started and stay afloat as a freelancer. Remote jobs hiring immediately is a hot topic. All of a sudden everyone wants to work from home and they want to do so right now. In truth, there isn’t a magic wand that grants employment. However, there are options available when you need a remote job like yesterday.

With this in mind, read on to learn why hiring takes so long, options available for remote jobs hiring immediately, and ways to speed up a traditional remote job search.

How Long Does It Take to Find a Remote Job?

On average it takes five to six months to find a job according to TopResume. This includes both remote and in-person jobs. However six to seven months is standard for remote jobs. Typically, remote hiring takes longer because everything is coordinated digitally.

Of course, these are just averages. Some job seekers have shorter job search windows. And others have much longer ones.

Either way, anticipate roughly six months to pass between application and offer.

Why Does It Take So Long?

It’s frustrating, I know. You’re eager to work and want remote jobs hiring immediately – not in five to seven months!

But a lot happens when a company posts a remote job.

Open Applications

First, companies gather applications and resumes. Most companies accept applications from two to four weeks. During this time not much else happens.

Application Review

Once the application period closes the hiring manager has hundreds (and sometimes thousands) of resumes to sort through. Fortunately, most companies use Applicant Tracking System (ATS) to narrow down the talent pool. ATS searches resumes for keywords. Those that have the keywords move to the ‘yes’ pile and those that don’t are discarded. Now the recruiter can manually review the ‘yes’ resumes and extend interview offers.

Screening Interviews

The majority of companies will conduct a round of phone interviews first. These are usually screening interviews. You may be asked about your background, experience, education, availability, and home office setup. If you pass the screening interview, a more formal interview will be scheduled.

Formal Interviews

Now hiring managers will conduct formal interviews. For remote workers, this can be another phone interview or a video interview like Zoom. Please note, just 2-3% of applicants make it to this stage!

Job Offer

On average a job offer happens 5-7 days from the interview. Usually more than one person makes a hiring decision. Needless to say, it takes time to compare notes and come to a final decision.

Job Search Delays

Hiring takes a lot of time and effort under perfect conditions. The process can go more slowly for many reasons, i.e.:

  • Vacations
  • Holidays
  • Budget
  • Schedule conflicts
  • Being too busy
  • Lack of resources

In the end, it amounts to a months-long process from application to offer.

Where Can I Find Remote Jobs Hiring Immediately?

Now you know how hiring happens and why it’s such a slooowww process. From here we can talk about ways to speed it up and even remote jobs hiring immediately.

But, I want to state from the start there are no instant remote jobs. Any listing that promises you’ll start today and make tons of cash is a lie or outright scam. However, there are options to start working remotely sooner rather than later. In some cases, you can start the very same day.

Micro Task Sites

Micro task sites are large crowdsourced platforms. First, clients post micro jobs. Then approved workers claim tasks. The term crowdsourced comes from “crowd” and “outsourced.” When the two are combined you get crowdsourced.

To start you fill out a questionnaire and short profile. Once approved you claim tasks. Simple, right? It is. The process is really quick. You start work the same day in most cases.

So, what’s the catch? Microtask sites don’t pay well. They’re meant to be cost-effective for clients. Some tasks might pay a penny upon completion. Others offer a few bucks.

CrowdSpring – Accepts freelance designers for projects like Art & Illustration, Logo & Identity, Web & Mobile Design to name a few.

Amazon Mechanical Turk – A 24/7 network of workers (called Turkers). Tons of different tasks from transcription to answering surveys.

ClickWorker – ClickWorkers decide when, where and how much they want to work! Claim simple micro jobs instantly and take assessments for higher paying tasks.

Freelance Marketplaces

Freelancing is another option for remote jobs hiring immediately. Usually, it takes time to get established. However, it’s easier to get started with freelance marketplace sites.

These sites are free for workers. It’s clients who pay to post jobs. Freelancers pitch their services to clients after a job is posted. Finally clients select the best freelancer for the job. Typically, freelance marketplace sites handles payment and ensures everything goes smoothly for both the client and freelancer.

Upwork – First up, is Upwork! Profiles are free but you have a limited number of pitches each month. However, more pitches are available to purchase.

Freelancer – In addition to Upwrk is Freelancer. It’s also free to create a profile but paid options are available too. Above all, a winning profile is key for visibility!

Fiverr – On the other hand is Fiverr. A gig is bought every four seconds here. However you create gigs to sell. Then clients purchase gigs. Finally, get creative! Any legal skill can be sold on Fiverr.

TopTal – Only accepts 3% of freelancers! As a result, you apply to work here. However, new freelancers are accepted as long as they’re skilled.

Guru – Next is Guru. Similarly to Upwork there’s a quoting system. In short, clients choose the best quote.

Online Contract Job Sites

Next, you can use contract sites for remote jobs hiring immediately. A contract job site hires workers for a limited time. Consequently, jobs last for a few months to a year. However contracts can always be extended or renewed.

The most popular online contract jobs involve writing, transcription, and content evaluation.

BKA Content – BKA Content is another writing site. However, applicants pass tests to get hired. Most assignments involve keywords and SEO.

Lionbridge – Lionbridge is similar to Appen. But Lionbridge focuses primarily on interpretation and translation services. So, bilingual applicants are always welcome to apply!

TranscribeMe – TranscribeMe is another online job site. For the most part there are transcription jobs available. However, there are editing openings from time to time.

Gramlee – Gramlee is always looking for talented editors. First editor must submit an application. After that Gramlee contacts qualified applicants.

CACTUS Global – CACTUS has both freelance and contract jobs. In general jobs are academic in nature. For example, Academic Editing and Academic Reviewer are two in-demand roles.

Where NOT to Find Remote Jobs Hiring Immediately

Lastly, let’s discuss online scams. From time to time I come across fake jobs pretending to represent a company on this list. For the most part the scam goes the same way:

A “representative” contacts you out of the blue. After that they offer you a job. However, you must pay a fee to get started. Once the fee is paid you never hear from the “company” again.

Of course not all remote jobs hiring immediately are scams. But you need to stay mindful of scammers out there. Sooner or later you will encounter one. To be sure you are not getting scammed remember:

  • Companies will not ask for money to get hired
  • People are not hired through instant message or chat
  • Your private data is needed only after you’re hired, i.e., bank details, SSN, etc.
  • Email communication comes from a company’s domain, i.e., ashlee@workfromhomehappiness.com NOT Gmail or yahoo

Given that scams are very real, stick to reputable remote job sites. On the other hand, avoid sites like Facebook and Craigslist where scammers are known to prey. Additionally, do not get caught up in direct sales or multi-level marketing (MLM). Direct sales reps paint a pretty picture of high earnings for little effort. However, the FTC reports 99% of MLM participants lose money. Further more, an FTC report states: “With the odds of profit being about one in 3,922 it is more appropriate to call MLM programs a ‘loss certainty’ than an ‘income opportunity.'”

We Work Remotely is one of the largest remote job boards. In fact, it receives more than 2.5 monthly visitors each month.

You can easily browse jobs by category like Programming, Design, Copywriting, and more. WWR also maintains a Top 100 Remote Companies list. Be sure to use this list as a job search tool as you research and create your own target company list!

We Work Remotely also has a Slack Channel to join for even more ways to learn about remote work.

3. Just Remote

Just Remote is a great site to search for fully remote and partially remote jobs. As a reminder, partially remote jobs allow remote work sometimes but also require some in-office time too.

At Just Remote, you can search by category, job type, and even job origin. There’s also a large list of awesome remote-friendly companies from around the world.

You can even get a little resume help from Just Remote too! Through the Resume.io link simply select a template and create a remote resume that gets you hired.

4. Remote OK

Remote OK has a large collection of tech-focused remote jobs. But there is also an entire category of non-tech remote jobs too.

There’s a unique profile feature at Remote OK. You can sign up as a remote job seeker and join the talent pool. After that, you get matched with remote companies.

As far as remote job boards, Remote OK is a great way to supplement your job search. It’s convenient to create a job seeker profile and also sign up for daily job alerts. This makes it easier than ever for remote jobs to come directly to you.

5. FlexJobs

FlexJobs (be sure to use promo code AFFILPROMO for 30% off) is a membership site. That means you have to sign up for a paid plan in order to search remote jobs. Memberships range from monthly to yearly. For freelancers, a yearly plan works best (and saves the most money) since you constantly look for new clients and projects.

But for traditional remote job seekers, a month-to-month plan is ideal. Your job search (hopefully) won’t last for an entire year. If it does, you’re probably making some common remote job search mistakes!

Jobspresso is one of my favorite remote job boards because it hand picks leads. In other words, every single job listing is vetted before it’s posted. That means you never have to worry about work from home scams here. And even though all jobs are curated, it’s still free for all job seekers to use!

Easily browse jobs by popular categories like Developer, Marketing, and Customer Service. There’s even an option to post your resume so employers can find you.

Jobspresso sends out weekly job leads as well as daily remote jobs via Twitter and Facebook, so be sure to give them a follow on both platforms. Remember, the more active you are on remote job boards, the more leads you’ll discover.

7. Remote.co

At any given time, there are hundreds of new positions posted on Remote.co. Jobs are broken down by categories like Accounting & Finance, Data Entry, and Customer Service to name a few.

Of all the remote job boards on this list, Remote.co is the most information forward. The site provides a lot of helpful resources for job seekers including a Q&A section written by remote companies. It provides tons of insight into remote work from a company perspective.

Pro Tip: Use this information to your advantage by creating a job search strategy instead of aimlessly sending in applications!

8. Dynamite Jobs

As I type this, Dynamite Jobs has 1,223 positions listed. What I like about Dynamite Jobs is the search features. You can search by category, of course, but also time zone. This is super helpful for anyone living outside the United States and in need of international remote jobs.

You can also find amazing remote job resources and sign up for weekly handpicked job leads delivered to your inbox.

9. Hubstaff Talent

Hubstaff Talent connects companies with the best remote talent (that’s you!). Keep in mind, remote work found on Hubstaff is freelance.

Quick reminder, freelance work is a lot different than employee work. As an employee, you receive benefits like paid time off and health care. Freelancers are not entitled to these perks and work on a per project basis.

10. Working Nomads

Working Nomads curates its jobs from other remote job boards and similar employment sites. However, there is an emphasis on digital jobs and worldwide work here. So, if you want to be a true digital nomad and roam the globe while earning cash, this is a good site to start with.

There are both freelance and full time positions here. But be sure to read the job details carefully as some will require you to reside (or roam) within a specific country or time zone!

Get The Most Out of Remote Job Boards

Don’t just run to remote job boards for the leads (although you totally should). Make sure you take advantage of all the resources they offer too.

Most of the sites listed allow you to create job alerts. All you do is put in your email address and — boom — remote jobs delivered to your inbox on autopilot.

This makes it super simple to receive thousands of job leads every week and you don’t have to physically search for them. Again, your time is best spent on customizing your resume and making connections – not endless searching (and applying) for remote jobs.

When possible, join Slack channels. Many jobs are filled via networking. In fact, there’s an entire source of unpublished jobs called the “hidden job market.”

Tap into these unadvertised listings by networking specifically within the remote work world. And, for remote job seekers, there is no better networking than getting to know current remote workers and the companies that hired them. (After all, if they hired them, they can hire you too). When you do this, you expand your professional network with remote workers, learn about new roles, and uncover leads you won’t find anywhere else!

Apple work from home program is a legitimate way to work remotely. In fact, it’s quite popular in the world of work from home — and for good reason.

For starters, Apple was the first American public company to cross the major $1 trillion in market value. Impressive, right? And then there’s the cult-like popularity of their many products, including iPhones, iPads, Macs, and AirPods.

Who wouldn’t want to work for one of the largest most popular companies in the world? And, what’s even better, you can work remotely as part of the Apple work from home jobs team.

Before you get excited and start thinking, “Sign me up,” a little background info is definitely needed. Remember, not all work from home jobs are created equal. And, just like any job opportunity, there are pros and cons that need to be weighed.

Here’s what you need to know about Apple work from home jobs, including available job titles, restrictions, requirements, benefits, and of course tips on how to get hired!

At Home Advisor at Apple

The first big question you probably have is, “What work from home jobs are available at Apple?” The main jobs Apple has for remote workers is through their At Home Advisor Program. An At Home Advisor is part of AppleCare, which is Apple’s very own customer service department. In other words, they are remote customer service jobs.

If you’ve ever called Apple needing help with anything from iTunes to rebooting your iPad, you’ve spoken to a representative in the Customer Care Department. And, chances are, the person on the other end of the line is working from their home office instead of a cramped cubicle.

What Kind Of Customer Service Issues Will I Deal With As An At Home Advisor?

It depends. As an At Home Advisor, your job is to respond to customers’ questions — which can range from general inquiries about products to more in-depth queries regarding tech support.

At Home Advisors are able to help Apple customers via phone, email or chat, depending on the issue.

Do I Need To Be An Apple Product Expert To Become An At Home Advisor?

The short answer? No! Although customers can call in to ask questions about any Apple product or accessory, it doesn’t mean every At Home Advisor must know everything about all things Apple. You will have the chance to learn the full product line during training, but are not expected to handle support issues for all products at any given time.

However, you should definitely be an Apple enthusiast. In fact, the job description specifically states:

Be the voice of Apple, helping customers with live support by phone, chat, or email. On this team, you’ll share your passion for Apple products and services as you build relationships with customers, partners, or program members. 


Is This Full Time, Part Time, Seasonal? Will I Actually Be Employed By Apple?

The Apple Work From Home Team can be both full-time and or part time. During the holidays hiring definitely ramps up. Think of all the people receiving iPads, Macs, and AirPods between November-January. Many will require some type of support as they setup their new products!

Whether seasonal, full time or part time, all At Home Advisors are employed directly by Apple.

Do Apple Work from Home Jobs Have Benefits? What About Pay?

Absolutely! Both full time and part time Apple Work From Home employees receive benefits, which include paid time off, health insurance, 401(k) and more. Oh, and did I mention that all employees receive products discounts?!?!

Apple doesn’t share the pay rate directly on its work from home jobs listings. However, current and former at-home advisors report starting rates around $16.00 an hour.

Do I Need A Home Office?

Yes! A home office is part of working from home for Apple. Your office should have a door that closes so it can remain quiet and distraction free during work hours.

Other Apple work from home office requirements include:

  • Desk
  • Ergonomic chair
  • High speed internet connection with at least 5 megabits download and 1 megabit upload speeds

Not sure about your current internet connection? Use a free service, like Speed Test, to figure out your upload and download speeds.

What About A Work Computer?

Apple has got you covered. As an Apple Work From Home Advisor you are issued an iMac and headset. For free! Remember, this is for work only.

Will I Receive Training?

Of course. All new hires go through paid training as part of the Apple Work From Home Advisors team. The entire training program lasts between 5 and 7 weeks and is completed virtually with a live instructor. Training is comprehensive and includes topics like:

  • Advanced troubleshooting
  • Specific Apple product lessons
  • Customer service and support

Once training is complete, you’ll be ready to take on live customers using Apple’s unique approach to customer service.

And, don’t worry, training takes place at your home office using the company-provided iMac!

I’ve Never Used A Mac Before. Does That Matter?

Not necessarily. However, it is beneficial if you have previous Mac experience or familiarity with other Apple products. Remember, in Apple work from home jobs ads it specifically states “share your passion for Apple products…” It’s not technically a requirement to use them but it clearly helps!

Keep in mind, experience troubleshooting other operating systems, like Windows, and a willingness to learn about Macs allows you to still be considered for the program.

What Hours Will I Work?

That depends on the schedule you sign up for. But, remember, this is a customer service and support position. That means Apple Work From Home Advisors are expected to work evenings, weekends, and even major holidays. Don’t forget – Apple customer service is available 24/7/365.

I’m Interested in Apple Work from Home Jobs. How Can I Be Sure I’m Right For The Job?

If you love technology and enjoy helping people, this is a great fit for you. An ability to troubleshoot problems, offer resolutions, and work independently are all musts. Remember, a love for Apple products isn’t a prerequisite, but it certainly helps!

Head on over to the Apple At Home Advisor Career Page. There, you can learn more about the Apple Work From Home Program and search current job openings.

Note: Jobs will have an associated city and state. However, that does not matter. Support positions are remote and available throughout the US.

What’s The Application Process Like?

The first thing you have to do is sign in with your Apple ID. If you don’t have, you can easily create one.

From there, you can apply via LinkedIn or upload a resume. After that, you’ll go through a series of questions to make sure you’re able to get the job done. Questions cover topics like:

  • Internet speed
  • Home office set up
  • Previous customer service experience
  • Availability

These questions are used to determine whether or not you have the basics needed, i.e., experience and home office capabilities, to be successful.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – Have a home office ready to go ahead of time. It places you ahead of competition and shows you’re serious about remote work!

How Can I Increase My Interview Chances?

Great question! Today, many big-name companies, like Apple, use Applicant Tracking System (ATS) to find the best candidates.

ATS is a recruiting software that streamlines the hiring process for recruiters and hiring managers. When you, the job seeker, upload your resume it goes through the ATS. From there, the person in charge of interviewing and hiring uses the ATS to narrow down resumes from hundreds to a much more manageable number. To do that, they search resumes for keywords.

This means you need to make sure your resume has the right keywords in order to get found. If you don’t have the right keywords, your resume will never be seen by human eyes.

How To Keyword Optimize Your Resume

The good news is it’s relatively easy to keyword optimize your resume. The keywords you need to get found are hiding in plain sight! All you have to do is look to the job ad itself.

You see, the job listing employers place online are basically them describing their ideal employee. To make yourself the perfect fit, you simply need to pull the right keywords from the ad and place them strategically in your resume.

Easy, right?

It is. Just remember, only place keywords that are relevant to you and your experience on your resume. That is, no fibbing. If a company specifies candidates must have Photoshop knowledge and you don’t, it’s not okay to place Photoshop under your Skills Section just so you’ll fool the ATS.

How Do I Identify Keywords?

At first glance, keywords might not jump out at you. And, that’s okay. It can take a little practice to figure out what words need to make it to your resume and which don’t.

Fortunately, there’s an easy-to-use online tool that takes the guesswork out of resume optimization. It’s called JobScan.

What is freelance writing? It’s a question I’m asked. A lot.

In fact, any question about freelancing in general is a hot topic at the moment. After all, the US has the fastest growing freelance economy with revenue increasing 78% every year!

No wonder so many workers are curious about the freelance world. And, perhaps the MOST asked about is freelance writing.

But before I answer, “what is freelance writing,” allow me to share a brief personal story. (Feel free to skip to the next section. You won’t hurt my feelings. Well, maybe a little).

What is freelance writing? Good question! Find out what freelance writing is and whether or not it's the right work from home career path for you.

My Freelance Story

Do you picture yourself freelance writing on the beach with your toes in the sand and a coconut-filled cocktail at hand?

Same.

The flexibility of freelancing is what lures people in. It hooked me 12 years ago and I’m still going strong today! Granted, I’ve never worked from the beach but it’s nice to know I could if I wanted to.

But seriously, more than a decade ago I too found myself asking, “What is freelance writing?”

I hated my corporate job working in HR and Legal Departments. My ability to climb the corporate ladder was, ahem, not good. Plus, the distractions, near constant interruptions, one-hour commute, and office politics were draining. I couldn’t picture working this way for the next 40ish years.

What Is Freelance Writing: My Own Path to Freelance Writing

So, I started job searching.

Spoiler Alert: I did not find a new job. However, I discovered freelancing and the community of professionals who chose to forgo the traditional corporate world to strike out on their own. And impulsive 20-something Ashlee put in her two weeks’ notice soon after in pursuit of answering what is freelance writing once and for all. (Not something I recommend, but also not something I regret).

Long story short, I kicked off my career as a freelance writer with zero experience. My first year was difficult. At times I had to piece together a living to make ends meet. Then a couple years into it, I had my first child. That’s when I panicked but also truly embraced freelancing for all its worth.

As a new mother I was able to stay home with my son and earn a living on my (well, actually his) schedule. I seriously was living the best of both worlds: career and motherhood.

It was wonderful and exhausting, and I wouldn’t change it. But, I share my story with others so it’s clear that freelancing is a valid option but an option that comes with a steep learning curve, tears, and a lot of hard work.

In other words, it’s not for everyone. But is it for you?

So, what is freelance writing?

All right. Now, let’s get down to the real reason you’re here; to find out what is freelance writing.

Simply put, freelance writing is when you contract your writing services to a client or company for a fixed price. Your contract may be for a single piece of content or for an ongoing project.

For example, you can write a single blog post or create weekly blog posts for an ongoing contract.

Really, it’s up to you which projects you choose, the clients you work with, and the terms of your contract like pay, timeline, etc.

What are the different types of freelance writers?

I wouldn’t be able to properly answer what is freelance writing without discussing the types of freelance writers. We all have a type (Henry Cavill, amiright?) and its important to know your freelance writing type.

That’s because there are a ton of different avenues for you to choose from. And, it’s in your best interest to focus on a very specific type of freelance writing when starting out. This is called your niche and choosing the right one will seriously set you up for success.

So, what are these different types of freelance writers? Sit back ’cause there are a lot. But, in an effort to not overwhelm you, I’m breaking down freelance writers into five extremely broad categories.

1. Technical Writer

A technical writer transforms complex information into content that is more easily understood. Think instruction manuals, how-to guides, operation instructions, and brochures. You may also create graphs, charts, and diagrams.

When creating, updating and enhancing the documentation, adhere to format, content and style guidelines, giving consideration to usability and ensuring accuracy, consistency and quality. Additionally, this position will be required to administer the processing of documents via the established Document Processing Review process. May require communication through a variety of media (e.g., CD, intranet, on-line training, etc.).

2. Business Writer

Freelance business writers are hired for A LOT of different jobs. Common business writing needs encompass everything from grants to white papers and even press releases and speeches! Lately, there’s been a surge in education writing jobs because of the number of students who transitioned to online learning during the pandemic.

Other business writers include career writers, legal writers, medical writers, tech writers, grant writers, and finance writers. Remember, if there’s a business for it, there are writers needed. When I say this is a big category, I mean it.

3. Ghostwriter

Boo! Ghostwriters aren’t spooky at all. They’re hired to write on behalf of someone else. The “someone else” gets the official credit for the content even though you, the ghostwriter, penned it. Ghostwriters are used for books, essays, speeches, articles, and editorial posts.

The Ghostwriter will achieve this goal by proactively engaging with our clients, writing and editing the editorial through our ghostwriting process.

4. SEO Writer

SEO is short for Search Engine Optimization. This is the practice of creating online content that ranks well in searches. Website owners want their business/product/service to show up on Page 1 when a potential buyer uses Google.

As a result, agencies and brands hire SEO writers to create keyword-rich content like blog posts and product descriptions that helps boost search engine rankings.

SEO writers usually focus on product reviews, how-to guide, blog posts, and website pages. When written with SEO in mind, all these pieces of content help businesses get found online.

Detailed outlines will be provided to the SEO writer.

5. Social Media, Sales, and Copywriter

Love it or hate it, social media plays a big role in the world. Businesses use social platforms to connect with customers, provide support, and share promotions. Consumers turn to social media to discover new products and make buying decisions.

That’s why companies turn to social media writers to create engaging content that performs well on various platforms. But, it doesn’t just end at social media! Marketing writers craft email campaigns, write sales copy, and focus on using words that convert consumers into customers.

As a social media or marketing writer you might send out weekly newsletters, craft 280-word tweets, come up with social media copy, put together sales content for a product, or draft landing page copy that converts!

How much do freelance writers earn?

Probably the next question after “What is freelance writing,” is “How much do freelance writers earn?”

This is not a one answer question. For starters, freelance writers can be paid per project, word, or letter.

For example, one client hires you to write a 500-word blog post for $50 while another offers $.10 per word.

However, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, writers and authors as a whole earn roughly $33.42 per hour.

What kind of experience do I need?

It depends. Blogging doesn’t require previous experience. In fact, anyone can learn how to start a blog and call themselves a blogger. That’s what I did. 🙂

However, virtually all other types of freelance writing jobs require some kind of experience. That’s why I highly suggest online training or certification if you have zero writing experience.

I know what is freelance writing. Now where can I get freelance writing training?

This depends on the type of freelance writing you want to do. After you answer, “What is freelance writing,” your next step is to pick a niche. Remember, your success as a freelance writer really depends on selecting a niche. You cannot effectively market yourself as a “general freelance writer.” Instead, pick one of the types of freelance writing niches to get established.

Once you decide to focus on a type of writing, i.e., SEO writing, content marketing, social media, ebooks, grants, you will have a much clearer path to your career. That includes the type of online training and/or certification needed.

If you haven’t picked a niche yet, don’t panic. It’s actually a good idea to check out training programs to see what is covered. The curriculum provides a very realistic view of what you can expect to do as a full time freelance writer in that niche.

Remote job search mistakes happen. And that’s okay. Remember, remote job searches are tough. You’ve got to keep an eye out for scams and compete with hundreds of applicants. Plus, there are so many terms unique to remote work that you have to know. Otherwise, you end up with an awful case of information overload and fail to make meaningful progress.

What’s a 2022 remote job seeker to do? First, don’t panic. The only way to fix mistakes is to know which remote job search mistakes you make. Then you can fix them!

So, if your job search is stalled read on. You may accidentally make these common mistakes that sabotage your search. But, don’t worry. Once you know what they are, you can easily fix them. And, the sooner you do, the easier your remote job search becomes.

1. You Don’t Have a Focus

There are a lot of benefits to remote work. Time and money saved are just two of the obvious ones. But, don’t forget about the all-important ‘happiness factor’ too! Studies repeatedly show that remote workers = happier workers. (I didn’t name this blog Work From Home Happiness for nothing).

Of course, the happiness boost and no daily commute makes remote work incredibly appealing. And, I don’t blame you for wanting to do anything and everything to land a remote role ASAP. However, there is a right way and a wrong way to stack the remote job odds in your favor.

Unfortunately, many enthusiastic remote job seekers opt for the wrong way. They declare they will do any job as long as it’s work from home.

Sound familiar? If so, you’re making perhaps the biggest mistake to job search success.

Remember, you are neither qualified for or interested in the literally thousands of remote jobs available at any given moment. For starters, you can’t position yourself as the perfect hire with this generalist approach. And, more importantly, you don’t have to settle to work from home. Instead, focus on jobs you’re qualified for and actually want to do.

Remember, remote job searches are not a numbers game. Job seekers are better off applying to fewer jobs that they are well qualified for and interested in doing. I call this determining your remote work type.

When you determine your type, your remote job search suddenly becomes more clear. With greater clarity, comes more progress. In job searches, progress = interviews & job offers.

2. You Look In The Wrong Places

Big-name job boards are great for local job searches. Remote job searches? Not so much. That’s because traditional job boards often list office jobs as remote-friendly when they’re not. Unsuspecting job searchers spend precious time and effort on a job application only to ultimately find it wasn’t remote after all.

Similarly, looking for remote work on sites like Craigslist or Facebook can be a waste of time too. Often, scammers will prey on job seekers here and promise work-from-home riches for a small upfront investment or fee. (More on that in a minute).

Of course, these aren’t real remote jobs from legitimate companies. They are nothing more than scams. Period.

I always recommend you stick to niche job boards and LinkedIn. If I can find literally hundreds of job leads on a handful of sites, you can too!

3. They Don’t Optimize Their Resumes

A single remote job can receive hundreds of applications. One recruiter can’t possibly sift through them all on their own.

That’s why most mid-size and large companies rely on Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to do the heavy-lifting for them.

ATS is able to scan through hundreds of resumes in a matter of seconds and find the best matches for the job.

But, how does a computer know which applicants are a good fit and which aren’t?

Keywords!

That’s right. The ATS scans your resume for keywords. If yours has the right ones, you’re put in the ‘yes’ pile. If not, your resume is discarded and never even see by a real person.

Most remote job seekers do not optimize their resume. Instead, they send the same carbon copy out to every single job they apply to. Sure, they apply to dozens of jobs a day. But, in the end, they don’t get callbacks or interview requests. Remember, remote job searches are all about quality over quantity.

Yes, it takes longer to keyword optimize your resume. But, it pays off in the long run with a shorter job search and greater job offers!

4. They Don’t Prepare For Remote Work In Advance

Hiring managers want to know you’re ready for remote work BEFORE they hire you. That means you need to prepare in advance for remote work.

To do this, set up your home office. Make sure you have high-speed internet. Learn how to use common apps and tools like Google Docs and Slack.

The more you know about remote work, the better. In fact, during the interview process, you will get asked about your ability to work remotely. There are common interview questions specific to remote workers.

Prepare answers in advance to position yourself a great remote worker. A ready-to-go home office and knowledge of remote work is invaluable in your job search.

5. They Fall for MLM and Pyramid Schemes

We know how awesome remote work is. So awesome, in fact, that some people will do anything to kick their cubicle to the curb — including falling for MLM or pyramid schemes.

I’ve made it my mission to help job seekers avoid these work-from-home scams. Multi-level marketing and pyramid schemes rely on recruiting to make money. You pay a fee to get started and then try to recruit others.

99% of MLM sellers lose money according to the FTc.

The more people in your ‘down line’ the more you earn. Hence why those on the top are the ones that make money. Everyone else in the pyramid struggle to turn a profit as they endlessly recruit others.

There are a lot of #bossbabes on Facebook. They make their “business” seem like a dream. You earn a ton of money for little work. All you have to do is pay an upfront fee to get started.

Sounds too good to be true, right? That’s because it is.

6. They Aren’t Organized

Job searches are tough. Remote job searches are harder. A remote job search can easily get away from you. The best way to combat this is to be organized.

Keep track of all the jobs you apply to. A simple spreadsheet can accomplish this. Note where you found the job, the position title, contact information and how you applied (ATS, direct email).

The average remote job search takes 5-7 months. In that time, you will apply to hundreds of jobs. It is impossible to keep track of them all in your head. Get in the habit of tracking your applications now. This simple step helps you feel in control instead of endlessly spinning your wheels.

You should also create an email address you use exclusively for job search activities. Gmail is free to use and comes with bonus apps that remote teams commonly use. You can even use this email address to receive job alerts. Now all your job search activities are conveniently housed in one (searchable) location.

Awkward, right?

Let’s say the interviewer asked, “How would previous coworkers describe you?”

And, it’s not surprising. At the end of the day you, me, and Elon Musk only have 24 hours to work with. No amount of money can buy more time. So, instead, we strive to do more with the limited time we have.

Remote workers are no exception. In fact, telecommuters often work extra hours to increase their productivity.

Unfortunately, working more doesn’t guarantee greater productivity. For many, working too much actually has an opposite effect (more on that in a minute).

That’s why it’s so important to establish productivity tips for working from home for good. These practices set the foundation for a thriving remote-focused career.

What is Productivity Anyway?

First, let’s talk about productivity. There’s a common misconception about what it actually means to be productive. The literal definition of productivity is: 

“the effectiveness of productive effort, especially in industry, as measured in terms of the rate of output per unit of input.”

Unfortunately, this is a simplistic take on the term. Sure, you can easily measure the rate of output versus input when dealing with machines. For example, printers are assigned PPM (pages per minute) to inform consumers how quickly their inkjet can churn out documents. 

But, we’re not printers, machines, or robots. We’re human. And humans have variables that affect their productivity every single day. 

What Affects Our Productivity?

You know that feeling when you’re in a state of flow? In those moments, you hit your stride and effortlessly sail through tasks. Then you stop for lunch, eat something that doesn’t sit well with you, and spend the afternoon aimlessly floating from task to task seemingly busy but not getting much done.

  • Sleep
  • Stress
  • Health
  • Relationships
  • Work environment

These factors result in varying states of focus and flow! That’s why I always preach productivity tips for working from home for the long run. Remember, you’ll never achieve automated robot status on the daily. And that’s okay.

The ultimate goal is not to be robotic. Instead, focus on healthy time management habits to promote productivity for the long haul.

Long Term Productivity Tips for Working from Home 

Most remote workers want to continue telecommuting long term. In fact, 97% of surveyed remote workers want to remain remote for the rest of their career according to the State of Remote Work 2022.

This desire to create long-term remote careers is totally understandable. After all, remote work comes with tons of documented benefits like less stress, more time, and money saved without a daily commute. 

But just as many remote workers fear being called back into the office if they are not productive enough. Sadly, these fears are not unfounded. A Harvard Business Review (HBR) study found 38% of managers agree that remote workers perform worse than office workers.

In response, remote workers work longer hours. They believe longer hours = more productivity. However, working longer hours is not the solution. In fact, roughly 20% struggle with working more than they should.

So, if working more doesn’t work, what’s the solution? For remote workers, the secret to productivity is all about work quality over work quantity.

1. Prioritize Tasks

Have you ever heard of the Pareto Principle? Often called the 80/20 Rule, it suggests just 20% of activities account for 80% of results. 

What is the Pareto Principle?

The Pareto Principle dates back to 1896. Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto observed that just 20% of people owned 80% of land in Italy. Pareto also noticed that 20% of his garden produced 80% of the fruit! 

80/20 Examples: 

  • 80% of vegetables come from 20% of plants
  • 80% of revenue comes from 20% of customers
  • 80% of points earned come from 20% of players 

The Pareto Principle helps remote workers amplify productivity by using their time on tasks that produce results. In other words, you get rid of busy work to focus on high-impact items. 

How to Use Pareto for Work from Home Productivity

First, create a master to-do list for the day. Next, scan through your list. Your goal is to sort high-impact tasks from low-impact ones. High-impact tasks produce immediate results (quick wins) or are an important step in completing a larger project. Always prioritize high-impact tasks first. These go at the top of your to-do list.

Low-impact tasks are fill-in tasks (busy work) or thankless tasks, ones that take a lot of time to complete with little to show for in the end. Save low-impact tasks for the end of the work day when productivity and focus fizzle out. It’s not uncommon to discover some low-impact tasks are actually unnecessary! 

That’s it. Prioritizing tasks is one of the basic yet most effective productivity tips for working from home. Just ten minutes of pre-planning your work-from-home day helps you focus on tasks that matter! Remember, regularly putting the Pareto Principle into practice has the greatest impact on your overall productivity.

2. Set Work Boundaries

We already know that working less is better for our productivity. And the first of the working from home productivity tips showed how you really can work less yet do more. Our next productivity tip also focuses on time management to help boost productivity.

It’s no secret that remote workers complete the majority of work online and communicate with coworkers via text, messenger, Slack, or similar platforms.

This is great for remote collaboration but not so great when it’s time to disconnect at the end of the workday. In fact, a survey of remote workers showed working too much as one of their biggest struggles.

Honestly, it’s not surprising. In our ever connected world we’re conditioned to constantly be doing. We wear busyness like a badge of honor. The more we do the more bragging rights we have.

In the end, we place ourselves in competition with, well, ourselves. This self-imposed competition is commonly called hustle culture.

As a lifestyle, hustle culture prioritizes work over all else (even family, friends, and hobbies). Unfortunately, hustle culture is toxic.

Examples of Hustle Culture:

  • Emails are answered during family dinner time
  • Client phone calls are taken on weekends 
  • Personal plans are canceled to continue working 

Eventually, boundaries no longer exist and work spills over into every aspect of life. In the end, relationships become strained and work performance declines. Instead of increased productivity, working more has an opposite effect. 

Research tells us that individuals who work longer hours produce poor quality work, make more mistakes, and experience reduced happiness.

Who wants to work like that? 

To build a happy, healthy career from home it’s important to set clear and consistent boundaries. 

How to Set Boundaries for Work from Home Productivity

You work from home, but that doesn’t mean you have to work whenever you’re home. Instead, separate the two even though they happen in one place. 

A lot of productivity experts will tell you to shut down your computer and turn off your phone after work. I disagree. It’s impractical to completely disconnect. After all, your personal life happens on your phone and computer too. 

Fortunately, you don’t have to do a drastic disconnect to enjoy well deserved down time. Instead set boundaries that separate work and home just by communicating. That’s it.

Communicate Your Work Boundaries

Let coworkers know when you’re signing off for the day and when you’ll be back. This is especially helpful when you work with teammates or clients in different time zones.

Next, consider using an email autoresponder after hours, on weekends, during holidays, and for days off. A simple automated reply clearly communicates to senders that you’re not in but will respond when you’re back.  

Similarly, set yourself away on Slack so coworkers know you’re not “in office.”

Coworkers, companies, and clients don’t expect you to answer 24/7. (If they do, it’s time to look for a different job). However, if you regularly answer emails, texts, and messages every day of the week at all hours, you condition others to expect . Stop it!

Get in the habit of clearly communicating to work connections when you’re in the office and when you’re out of the office. Let them know they can message you when you’re away, but they won’t receive replies until you return. 

Remember, boundaries are a good thing. They are simple, effective, and a healthy part of working remotely.

Get in the practice of setting them and actually following them. You’ll avoid burnout, feel happier, and routinely boost productivity.

Finally, I want to include apps to help you improve time management to increase productivity. Technology is awesome. You should definitely put it to work for you.

1. RescueTime 

RescueTime is a good place to start if you’re looking to develop better productivity habits at home. Why? RescueTime runs in the background of your computer or mobile device and tracks all the time spent using individual apps and websites.

This gives you a really good idea of where exactly it is your time goes every day. At the end of each week, you get an email summarizing your activities — you also get a Productivity Score.

You might be surprised to learn how much time you actually spend answering emails, checking Facebook, or Googling various things.

I like that RescueTime lets you set daily goals and easily view your progress. For the longest time, I felt like I spent too many hours in front of my computer — and I was, but on the wrong things. RescueTime let me spot inefficiencies in my day and become better at time management. And remember, time management is actually the secret to increased productivity!

2. Pocket

You know when you’re on Twitter for a legitimate work reason, like sending a direct message to a contact, when you see a tweet with a link to a story you just have to read? Well, when you use Pocket, you can save that link and plug along with your workday knowing that your good-read is safely stored for later.

This free productivity tool keeps you from clicking through time-sapping links, helping you stay focused on the task at hand. Once your workday is over, you can see all of the items you put in your Pocket (articles, videos, GIFs, memes) you name it, you can probably put it in your Pocket.

Any.do is perfect for remote workers because it helps you draw lines between work and home! You can to-do lists that separate work and personal tasks. You’ll be surprised by just how much you can get done in just 25 distraction-free minutes.

Thankfully, remote work is here to stay. However, remote workers still worry about getting sent back to the office if their productivity is not on point. To compensate, they work too much which actually causes productivity and work quality to decline.
